May 19th - Crease Island Cove

After listening to the weather report, checking the tide & current tables and looking outside, we decided to do the next leg of the journey north. It turned out to be the right decision.

Since we hit Squirrel Cove, the route has generally been inside and protected and not subject much to weather issues.  Timing the currents has been the crucial element. Today's leg involved a 14 mile section in Johnstone Strait. The nature of Johnstone Strait tends to funnel wind which, with certain currents, can cause very short steep waves. 

Fortunately, both the wind and the current were in the same direction behind us. The current gave us a 25% boost in speed and tended tended to flatten any seas created by the wind (which wasn't bad to begin with). A low is schedule to cross the north end of Vancouver Island tonight so we weren't sure about tomorrow's weather and its suitability for the leg we ended up doing today.

After the 14-mile section, we went back inside and have worked our way into our current anchorage on the SE corner of Crease Island (May 19).

Our current plans are to spend two nights here and perhaps do a kayak paddle tomorrow. We're not sure what we'll do on Monday (Victoria Day in Canada).

Tuesday we may head to Port McNeill for some provisioning and laundering. We also want to hit Alert Bay somewhere along the way in order to visit the museum there.
