May 27th - Sutherland Bay, Drury Inlet

Today’s travel was relatively short (~13 miles) but had to be timed through Stuart Narrows. That meant a leisurely start about 10:30 AM in order to hit the narrows on the trailing edge of the flood and before the narrows switched to the ebb.

The weather is generally sunny but there is a strong wind out of the WNW. We were traveling in a westerly direction so we had the wind on our nose all day. The waters are protected so the wind waves don’t build up to anything much but the cool wind kept us off the fly bridge except as we went through the narrows (the view while looking for eddys or debris is better).

We didn’t see any other boaters as Drury Inlet is kind of a side show to the Broughtons since you have to exit the way you came in and there isn’t anything famous at the end. Also, most of the recreational boaters that we’re seeing this early in the year are heading for Alaska. For us, there is an anchorage that gives good access to a bunch of islands that look like some neat kayaking.

We had the anchor dropped and engine off in Sutherland Bay (May 27 ) at 1 PM.

The forecast is for the winds to die down overnight as the high pressure moves over us. If so, we’ll do some kayaking tomorrow and spend another night here.
