June 13th - Fury Cove, Penrose Island

We left Shearwater this morning in light winds and headed for Fury Cove (June 13). For us this was a long day, 52 miles. Much of the time we were fighting the incoming flood which slowed us down to a gentleman's jogging pace of 6 knots or so. We were anchor down and engine off at 3:30 PM.

The fury of Fury Cove is on the outside. The cove is well protected and it has a lovely view across low islands of the swells crashing on the reefs on the outside. It is also the first good anchorage you encounter after you round Cape Caution or, as in our case, the last before heading out. We're sharing the cove with five other boats, probably most northbound and who rounded Cape Caution today.

Entering the cove was not real difficult but when you are as "green" as we are, anytime you have crashing surf on the rocks on either side of the channel, even a channel several hundred yards across, it gets your attention.

We'll monitor the weather and buoy reports before we make our decision whether to move tomorrow.
