June 1st - Miles Inlet - "Yes, cats do get sea sick."

We made an early morning (5:45 AM) departure from Port McNeill taking advantage of the calm conditions to position ourselves for rounding Cape Caution. We travelled to Miles Inlet (June 1) arriving about 11 AM.

While the winds were calm and the seas placid, the further north we went, the more the swell from the Pacific Ocean started to make itself apparent. Despite the swell being pretty mild (far less than a meter), the cats clearly found it unsettling. First Maggie threw up and then ten minutes later Annie followed suit. Marcia sequestered the girls in their carriers in case there were more accidents. The only other one was Maggie pooping a few moments after going in the carrier.

As we were making our approach to the channel entrance for Miles Inlet we spotted what we thought was some driftwood. I determined we'd miss it and kept my eyes forward. Marcia thought it look a bit odd and continued to watch it as we passed. Turned out to be a sea otter floating on its back watching the world go by. We passed within 20 feet and the sea otter remained totally unconcerned.

The anchorage here is protected but there isn't a lot of swinging room. In case others show up, we put in a stern tie to limit our swinging. It was good practice for us since we haven't done one since last year.

Miles Inlet is the last good anchorage before Cape Caution. If the weather is good, we can continue north and round the Cape in only a few hours from here. Anticipating continued swells, the cats we'll travel in their carriers while we're underway.
