June 4th - Eucott Bay

An early morning rain started the day and it continued to spit off and on for most of the day. We left Ocean Falls about 9:20 AM and cruised up Dean Channel to Eucott Bay (June 4), about 28 miles distant.

Because we are a slow boat, whenever possible, we like to have the currents work in our favor. All of the tide tables indicated we should have had a flood current in our favor but we were fighting a 1+ knot ebb current. We read one of the guide books further and it mentioned that in the Spring in early Summer, the fresh water runoff from the mountains creates a fresh water ebb current on top of the denser salt water in these channels regardless of the tidal current.

Dean Chanel is a true fjord. Mountains rise to several thousand feet on either side and the water depth routinely exceeds 1,000 feet. We are quite a ways inland, probably 20-30 miles via water travel, from connecting with the ocean.

Eucott Bay was recommended by the Harrison's from the Selene 40 Slainte that we bumped into at Ocean Falls. Their recommendation was spot on. It is a lovely bay surrounded by mountains. Four river otters "greeted" us as we came into the bay. One side of the shore is actually grassy so we hope we'll get to see a bear cruising for a meal before we leave.

Tomorrow we'll retrace most of today's route and head for an anchorage which will allow us to move further north on the following day.
