June 3rd – Ocean Falls

Once again, the day started off lovely, calm winds, sunshine and mild temperatures. We continued our cruise north on the glassy waters of Fitz Hugh Sound. We saw lots of dolphins along the way.

Today’s destination is Ocean Falls (June 3 ), an abandoned Crown Zellerbach company town. At one time 5,000 people lived here. Today, only 40 full-time residents live here. The dominating feature is the large dam behind the town which generates power not only for Ocean Falls but for other communities such as Bella Bella and Shearwater.

When we tied up at the dock, we noticed a Selene 40, Slainte’, owned by Maureen and Van Harrison. They charted our boat in 2005 and subsequently bought their own Selene, delivered in 2006. We had a great time visiting with them and their friends Jim and Linda who were traveling in their Nordhavn 40. They, like many, are on their way north to Alaska.

While the weather started the day lovely, change is in the air. The wind has picked up dramatically and the clouds are building. The forecast calls for rain. Oh well, this is the coast after all.
